Shane
“Choppa” focuses on professional boxing

Kick boxers who box usually have average or un-flattering results. No matter how willing they are, against a purist fist fighter they are often made to look mundane. New Zealand’s greatest pound for pound kick fighter Shane Chapman is looking at pro boxing as a serious career option, judging by his latest adventure.

He will fight this Saturday night at an absolutley ripped middle weight, carrying on with his winning ways.

The month of May gone by saw Chapman fight Daniel McKinnon for his WBO (World Boxing Organisation) Oriental Middle weight title, which went the full twelve rounds was probably one of the best fights in New Zealand boxing history. In an ailing sport it gave a much needed boost as the privileged few who had tickets to witness this epic unfold. McKinnon himself admitted that Chapman by far was his toughest test and guaranteed a re-match.

Picking up where he left off, Chapman under the guidance of Focus boxing and Chris Martin is preparing for his re-match with Samoan middle weight champion, Niusila Seiuli-- playing under card super fight to Jason Suttie V Alofa Solitua on ETK ‘Nemesis’ fight card this Saturday the 18th October.

Chapman defeated Seiuli quite comfortably first up last September and this fight should be no different, if not a more improved performance.

His initial signs as a boxer when he was up against real class were promising and being the fighter he is, took on the main event on Fight Club VII against McKinnon. Touted as the “next best thing of Kiwi boxing”, he took the fleet footed middle weight twelve full rounds, with the difference being an eight count put on him mid way.

Boxing as opposed to kick boxing has more dollars and opportunity for this Wyllie pro. He is probably matured as a professional to his peak and fighting with sense and sensibility comes easy.

Two more boxing fights inside the next three weeks followed by a Muay Thai headliner against Aussie Chad Walker on November twenty second, it’s as busy as it gets in this part of the world. Then there is the possible re-match for “unfinished business” on Fight Club nine (FC 9), December sixth with McKinnon.

In marketable and serious enough terms he is the only other professional who may be good enough to have a crack at higher honours if he decides to focus exclusively on boxing. Keep in mind that “Choppa” is only beginning as a Middle weight, which is probably one of the most competitive weight divisions in the world. Furthermore he could put some respectability in a sport where that very term is becoming ironic.

“Choppa” whether he decides to go all fistic will be known soon enough. It is arguably his best option, for a man with five boxing fights (and ninety seven kick fights) it is a long road ahead. If anyone can cut it, it is him. One thing for sure, he will fight the best and give his best—bringing sexy back into skill based boxing.

That’s why he was roguemag.com inaugural Pound for Pound MVP in two thousand seven.
